Earlier this week I went to the Fort Worth Log Cabin Village for the first time. My daughter had been there before and made her own candles and really loved playing in one of the cabins. I grew up in a farm house that was built in 1850 so exposed beams and other things in the village seemed common place.

When I last shutdown Aperture I apparently left it on a photograph I took of Shaw Cabin and Girstmill. Tonight when I started up Aperture the image really struck me. I’m now sharing that image with you. I have others that I’m still processing and hope to share someday.

For those interested in what processing I did: 5 bracketed shots, HDR Efex Pro, then Silver Efex Pro for conversion to B&W and the TinType filter. I’ve been reading about TinType lately and have thoughts of maybe someday using that form of photography, certainly creates one of a kind images. Until I get the time and expertise to do real TinType photography my modern darkroom will have to suffice. I thought TinType would be appropriate here given the date of many items at the village and when TinType photography came about, 1850s according to Wikipedia.

Yesterday the game was just past noon so the light was harsh and bright, though being late in the year in was a little lower in the sky. For the first half of the game we bribed the referee (our coach played both roles) but it didn’t help, the other team scored a few more goals than us. Oh well when the kids are this age, it is more important that they have fun. I am disappointed only one game left. I have been having a lot of fun watching the games and taking pictures. I find photography a lot more rewarding than my 9-5 job in Information Technology.

Last week I decided I want to try and get a good picture of each kid on the team, in other words, action but with each kid the focus and hopefully isolated. This week I managed to get the 4 of us out the door and to the game early. I was able to focus on the warm up and managed to get quite a few good pictures I think. I’ve sorted through the hundreds of pictures I grabbed for clearly bad shots. There are still hundreds of pictures. I’m posting them here for people to view.

I will be putting them on my “store” so you can view/download the originals, or order prints, etc.. I will update this post when I get that completed.

I think this photograph qualifies as “the money shot” for todays soccer game. I haven’t even finished the first look through the hundreds of photos I took this morning. I came across this shot and had to share it! I will be printing this in 8 x 10 size and giving it to his parents. The YMCA is having a photo contest this season but the rules say I have to submit a photo of my child. Too bad as I would certainly submit this one if I could. Do you like it? Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

I enjoyed this game a lot, it was sunny and warm instead of the last game which was cooler and wet. People have asked how to download the photographs and before I did not have an easy way for people to do that. I hope what I have done will make it easier for parents to either download a version of the photograph for the personal use or you can purchase prints right from my “store“. I signed up for an account with SmugMug.com and have setup a gallery for these pictures. On SmugMug you can get prints, calendars, coffee mugs, and other various things my these pictures. With the holiday season coming I know I’ll be ordering a few things for the grandparents, etc..

Below I have a slide show of the pictures. If you want to download any of them (FOR FREE) you can view them at my store along with getting prints made, etc. I certainly hope you enjoy them, and please leave a comment, I always appreciate the feedback.

Note — you can view the pictures full screen if you wish. In the lower right hand corner of the slide show are some icons, click on the middle one to view the pictures full screen.

A player on the other team, Cole, showed a move that I didn’t expect to see from a kid in this age group. He was taking the ball down the field and came upon one of our players. Most of the kids I have seen at this age level don’t have know how to either pass or go around the other player, but alas he did. I was amazed at the skill that he used for those few seconds of play that I watched. I think I was able to capture it fairly well.

When my daughter takes her turn to sit out during a game she has decided that is a time for her to take over control of the camera. She has enjoyed taking pictures for a couple of years now. It is always interesting to see the results from the point of view of a 5 year old. This week I’ve decided to share the pictures I could identify has being taken by my daughter. (Hey Coach, she likes you I think. )

I have not finished processing the photos yet but wanted to share these couple as I really like them. I love how the ball is in focus and the players are not, but enough of them can be seen that the viewer is able to sense the emotion of the scene.

In this one I wanted to experiment with some techniques and used a nice series of my daughter warming up. She loves the middle frame where both of her feet are off the ground at the same time.

My oldest child is in her first season of soccer and I finally dug my camera out of the boxes. I wish I had a different (read better) lens so that I could make the back ground in the photos blurred out and thus have better looking photos, but I have make do with the tools that I have currently.

I tried to photograph the US Capital building up close, but I got whistled at by the guards indicating not allowed. I didn’t have the energy to walk up the stairs to ask them if it was the photograph or the tripod that was the problem. (I learned at the Lincoln Memorial it is the tripod feet they object too, as certain feet can damage the floor.) The front of the building with a water fountain was just screaming to me for an HDR photograph, but alas it was not meant to be yesterday.

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. — Benjamin Franklin

I think we as a country have gone too far and given up too much of our liberties in the name of security. Anyone should be able to photograph government buildings, after all if we pay taxes then we own part of the building and thus I believe have a basic right to be able to photograph/draw/paint it. If we are not causing harm to others, then I believe we should be able to do something.

If I had a GigaPan and say a 70-200, or a 200-400 lens, then I could stand a far distance away and yet get a very detailed image of something. I wouldn’t be able to capture the photograph I wanted to take yesterday but if I wanted a detailed image of something with the intent of learning faults to cause harm, I don’t need to be close to accomplish.

Someday I hope to own a GigaPan EPIC Pro (until then I hope to get a Gigapan Epic to go with my Canon S95) so I can take very detailed landscape panoramic images combined with HDR as well. I imagine a nice panoramic print 64″ tall and very long, yet very detailed. Of course to accomplish my goal having a Nikon D3 and very powerful Mac Pro would be helpful. :)

I headed away from the US Capital building in search of other photographic items. I really like the architecture of the buildings on the corner of Constitution Ave NW and 3rd St NW. I also grabbed a shot looking down Constitution Ave. which when I processed it to look vintage, I think came out nicely. Printed at 13 x 19 looks very nice.

Processed using Aperture, NIK Software HDR Efex Pro, and Topaz Simplify on one as well.

I had time to process another one…. I get to pick it up tomorrow in a nice 20 x 30 print. :-) Tomorrow I hope to work on some of the panoramic photographs of Shenandoah National Park that I also took on this trip. Those are a bit harder as they are panoramic and HDR so it takes a lot longer to process. (I can process the Luray Caverns shots in HDR as well, but so far I’m not satisfied with the results.)

Yesterday my daughter and I visited Luray Caverns for the first time. The words, WOW and AWESOME don’t begin to describe the caverns, in my opinion. Truly an amazing thing that mother nature has created and continues to create. I could spend hours and hours in there, but alas my 4 year old daughter would not let me. I would love to have the place to myself, or at least nothing but serious photographers, so I can take panoramic shots and not have people using point and shoot cameras with their flashes firing, and messing up the long exposures that I’m trying to take. Anyone interested in a photography workshop/tour? I did a brief inquiry about group events but have to investigate further. If I got enough interest I would put an event together. Luray Caverns is about 2 hours from Washington, DC.

Here is the first picture that I have processed. I’ve sent this off to be printed 12 x 18 and 20 x 30. :)

Update: Adding a picture of the building, I like buildings built of rocks, or at least made to look that way. I used Nik Software‘s HDR Efex Pro (my first image with it) to create this picture.

I have a strong interest in HDR photography. I really love it when applied in a subtle way, though sometimes I like the overly done approach as well. I came across www.stuckincustoms.com and really enjoy Trey’s work. I then learned about NIK Software’s HDR Efex Pro, I am excited and eagerly awaiting its release. While waiting for that software to be released I got one of their bundles.

I started playing around with the various software pieces of the bundle and all I can say is Wow! This software makes working in my dark room a lot easier and the results are wonderful. I am still learning how to use the software so I’ll get better but even after just a day, the results are very nice.

If you scroll through the archives of my blog about a year ago I spent time with a wonderful family with the sole purpose of taking their pictures. That was a first for me, I was extremely nervous. One of the pictures from that day I really like but always knew it needed some assistance in the dark room. Today I used the new tools at my disposal and I think made a much better version.

So first is the original photograph, the 2nd image is the revised image.

What do you think? Better? Could it be better? Even though the child is not my own, I am so drawn to this picture. I love how the viewer is drawn to the thoughts that could be going through his mind. Of course this was just a very short moment in time, as kids have short attention spans and they were both running around that day.
